Teenagers 'bagging' mothballs to get high

The 18-year-old French woman was hospitalized with scaly skin on her legs and hands, appearing unsteady and mentally sluggish, doctors said.

They found the condition puzzling, especially since the woman's twin sister displayed similar, but less severe, symptoms and there was no family history of the problem, the doctors reported in this week's New England Journal of Medicine that

Several days later, doctors discovered the cause: a bag of mothballs stashed in her hospital room.

The teenagers had been using the mothballs to get high, inhaling air from the bag for about 10 minutes a day because classmates had recommended it. The sicker of the young women also had been chewing half a mothball a day for two months.

The doctors described the high as "dangerous" and most likely under-reported in medical literature.

The teenager told the doctors that she continued to use the mothballs during her hospitalization "because she thought her symptoms were not related to her habit," said Lionel Feuillet at the Hospital of Timone in Marseille, France.

Pregnant Clerk Raped During Robbery

Authorities released a composite sketch of a man wanted for storming into a convenience store and raping a pregnant store clerk during a robbery, according to Local 6 News. Investigators said an armed man wearing a mask entered a Citgo store on state Road 44 in Deland, Fla., and threatened the lone clerk. "She opened the cash register, provided him with the money at which point he escorted her outside to the back of the building, asked her to disrobe and violated her," Deland police Cmdr. Randall Henderson said. The culprit fled on foot after he raped the woman, police said. Investigators said the man was wearing a mask when he stormed the store but took it off when he assaulted her. "Anybody who can go into a store, rob somebody, then boldly take them outside and hurt them personally is someone we need to find quickly," Henderson said. Dishwasher Accused of Killing Boss

A restaurant worker fatally stabbed his boss after she repeatedly reprimanded him for putting pans through the dishwasher, prosecutors said Monday. Ryan Jones, 28, was ordered held without bail on a murder charge. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. He is accused of stabbing Valerie Oranski 20 times Saturday morning as the Old Country Buffet in the town of Dartmouth was about to open. Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Brackett said Jones had been reprimanded several times by Oranski, 39. "During the last two to three weeks, the defendant had made almost daily comments to other workers that he wanted to kill her," Brackett said. Police found the general manager on a restroom floor. She had wounds to her chest, stomach and neck. A steak knife that police believe to be the murder weapon was found in the restaurant. "The defendant had blood on his face; he had blood on his hands," Brackett said.

Malaysian princess slashed to death by son

Tengku Puteri Kamariah Sultan Abu Bakar, 64, younger sister of the Sultan of Pahang, was killed by her son Tunku Rizal Shahzan who slashed her with a hunting knife at their home here yesterday. Her husband Tunku Ismail Tunku Sulaiman, 74, suffered slash wounds on the abdomen. The 21-year-old youth, who was believed to have been under the inß uence of the psychotropic substance, syabu, later died from an apparent overdose at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan hospital. The drama unfolded about 1.20pm when Tunku Rizal jumped out of a room on the first floor of the double-storey bungalow onto an awning before falling into a neighbour’s compound. The neighbour, Tengku Ahmad Faizal Abdul Jalil, 40, said the young royal was in a deranged state and started pacing in front of his house. "He was saying that he was scared of something," said Ahmad Faizal, who is also Tengku Puteri Kamariah’s cousin. Ahmad Faizal who was resting under a tree in front of the house with two friends did not intervene.

Scotty's ashes headed for space

The cremated remains of actor James Doohan -- who played Scotty on T-V's "Star Trek" -- are headed for space, twice.

A spokeswoman for Space Services of Houston, which arranges memorial space flights, says Doohan's remains will go to the edge of space in October and return.

Susan Schonfeld (SHOHN'-feld) says the launch will take place October 21st in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It's part of the X Prize Cup festival promoting space flight. Schonfeld say a number of Trekkies are expected to attend a public memorial for Doohan.

A few months later, Space Services plans a launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with the remains of about 200 people, including Doohan and former astronaut Gordon Cooper.

Schonfeld says it was Doohan's wish before he died to go into space. The 85-year old actor died last July at his home in Redmond, Washington

Former 'N Sync singer Lance Bass has announced he is gay and is in a very stable relationship with "Amazing Race" reality TV star Reichen Lehmkuhl. The 27-year-old was afraid of coming out during his time with the boy band because he feared his sexuality would damage the group's commercial prospects. He tells People magazine, "I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything. "I didn't know. Could that be the end of 'N Sync? So I had that weight on me of like, 'Wow, if I ever let anyone know, it's bad.' So I just never did." The gubernatorial campaigns of Melody "Mimi" Damayo and Mary Carey could be seen as dirty politics, but their experience and exposure in adult films gives them some advantage, political pundits say.

"The whole notion that campaigns are supposed to rip off the veneer of a candidate - most porn stars leave very little hidden even before they get into the political arena," said Walter Shapiro, Washington bureau chief for Salon magazine.

"The porn star could say that although certainly interested in [fornicating], at least he or she isn't interested in [despoiling] the country, like most of the politicians who already are in," William Bike, author of the book "Winning Political Campaigns," wrote in an e-mail. "Or, the porn star could say that electing him or her would protect the little guy - after all, who knows more about protection?"

Damayo, a former adult-film actress with the stage name Mimi Miyagi, is running for governor of Nevada. Carey, who is still active in the porn business, finished 10th among 135 candidates in California's 2003 gubernatorial election.

Two candidates don't make a trend in this country, but porno-politicos have been firmly established on the international ballot. Illona Staller, also known as "Cicciolina," is the best-known pioneer, winning a seat in Italy's parliament in 1987. Since then, former and current adult film stars also have run for office in Japan and Chile.

L.A. seeks info on 50 women in killer’s photos

The sheriff’s department had received 100 calls and numerous e-mails by Wednesday after asking for help identifying women in dozens of decades-old photos taken by a double murderer who implied to his jury he’d killed others.

The photos had languished in an evidence archive for 22 years, until a cold case investigator rediscovered it last month and looked through its contents: about 50 images of young women, many of them scantily clad and striking poses like amateur models.

The photographer was on death row for killing two women, both aspiring models, in the 1980s.
