Glass Bottom Spelled Demise For Eponymous Boat
Four people safely evacuated a 100-foot glass-bottom boat off the coast of Malibu and watched the vessel sink. It was supposed to be turned into a restaurant.
The four-person crew had their own lifeboat, however Baywatch lifeguards and a rescue boat from the Santa Monica Police Department were dispatched to the scene at 8:40 a.m. as a precaution.
The boat, used in the 1966 Doris Day film "The Glass Bottom Boat" sank two miles off the coast of Zuma Beach. It departed Newport Beach Saturday at 2 p.m. and was headed to Martinez, near San Francisco.
Some Ohio Families Refuse to Claim Bodies
Thomas Tellis died in March, but his cremated remains are still waiting to be claimed at a Canton funeral home. Shortly after the 89-year-old's death, investigators located Tellis' daughter, but the woman, who was born out of wedlock and raised by another man, refused to claim Tellis' body.
The case is part of what coroners and funeral directors see as a disturbing trend: bodies going unclaimed because relatives are either unwilling or unable to shoulder the responsibility or expense of burying the dead.
Often, the reasons are economic. Funeral costs average more than $6,000, and that can create a burden for people struggling to make ends meet, said Harry Campbell, an investigator with the Stark County coroner's office.
While Stark County deals with only a handful of unclaimed bodies every year, more populous urban counties, such as Cleveland and Columbus, see a greater number. Last year Cuyahoga County investigated 43 cases. Franklin County had more than 140.
While these cases amount to only a fraction of the bodies that coroner's offices tend to annually, they are among the most disheartening.
'Streaker' selling bikini to pay for court costs
A woman who invaded the field in the final seconds of Saturday's test between New Zealand and Ireland in Hamilton wearing just a bikini has put the two-piece suit up for sale on an online auction website to help pay for her court costs.
Lisa Lewis, 25, ran onto the field at Waikato Stadium about 30 seconds before referee Stuart Dickinson blew the whistle to signal the end of the game, won by the All Blacks 34-23.
Lewis was grabbed by security guards and arrested by police and later charged with disorderly behaviour.
"As a result my bikini is up for sale to assist in paying for my court fines and costs. Come on people help me out," Lewis wrote on the Trade Me website (www.trademe.co.nz).
Probe into 'naked civil servants'
Civil servants on Tyneside are under investigation amid allegations staff romped around naked in offices and had sex in toilets.
One person at the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) in Newcastle has been sacked after officials began an investigation.
The antics emerged after some members of staff were caught on CCTV cameras.
The RPA is part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and administers millions of pounds in agricultural payments to farmers.
The agency said it was investigating claims that staff leapt naked from filing cabinets, had sex in office toilets, held break-dancing competitions during working hours and fought in a reception area.
Police Chase Down Man In School Bus
Medford police were involved in an unusual chase Sunday night. It was unusual because of the getaway vehicle that was involved.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that a bus was stolen and then allegedly used in an attempted burglary.
Police said the driver, identified as Luke Caraccio, 21, allegedly attempted to break in to a Friendly's restaurant in Stoneham, Mass., Sunday, shattering the glass of the restaurant and then threatening patrons with what they believed to be a handgun.
Oklahoma 'Games As Porn' Bill Signed Into Law
Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry has signed into law the State-specific Bill HB30004, which redefines a list of items, such as hardcore pornography, which are deemed “harmful to minors”, to include video games which use “inappropriate violence”.
The bill was authored by Republican State Representative Fred Morgan, and takes a similar stance to Utah Republican David Hogue’s HB257 “games as porn” bill, which was struck down in March, but would have made it a felony to knowingly exhibit or sell violent video games to minors.
The new Oklahoma law is due to come into effect from November 1st, but is in the meantime likely to be contested by industry body the ESA, under First Amendment concerns. Despite being one of the more draconian anti-games bills put before a State senate HB30004 has faced limited opposition, with apparently little concern being given to the consistent problems other similar bills have faced from legal challenges.
U.S. Military Leaks al-Zarqawi Sex Tape, Sunnis Riot
Thousands of Sunnis rioted after a U.S. military official had leaked a copy of a twenty-five-minute sex tape found in the rubble of the "safe house" where Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed on Wednesday.
The tape, which somehow survived the bomb blast that killed Mr. al-Zarqawi and seven of his associates, had been sent to a local television station, which mistakenly aired the tape last night during an episode of Funniest Home Videos.
In the tape Mr. al-Zarqawi is seen watching Muslim women in various stages of dress. He grabs his man region and growls suggestively several times while women lift their burqas away from their faces, revealing first one cheek, then the other. One woman is even seen licking her lips, swaying erotically, and sucking her left forefinger—a supreme act of sensuality/degradation in the Muslim world.
