And there were all these peripheral things that came with the festival: the artistic happenings, new writers, new painters, new sculptors. There were fire-eaters, palm readers, and prostitutes. This was the total pagan entertainment package. Today the Olympics are celebrated for their noble ideals of competition, friendship and culture. Do we find those ideals in the ancient games? We have a very sentimental attitude toward the ancient games. But this romanticized image with gentlemanly behavior and chivalry was largely devised by Victorian scholars in the 19th century.

Filming has already begun on "Donnie Darko" writer/director Richard Kelly's second feature film, "Southland Tales," and it looks like Kelly's trying to wrap up the casting process.
Cheri Oteri, Jill Ritchie, and Amy Poehler have signed on to "Southland Tales," which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, The Rock, and Seann William Scott. Among others joining the cast are Bai Ling, Miranda Richardson, John Larroquette, Jon Lovitz, Wallace Shawn, and Will Sasso. If nothing else, Kelly can claim his "Donnie Darko" follow-up effort features one of the most eclectic casts in recent years.

Is nudity profanity? The fine art of perception

Dennis McNally was carrying some of his paintings to his office at St. Joseph's University when a top administrator stopped him and asked to see them.

McNally, a Jesuit priest who chairs the department of fine and performing arts, demurred, knowing the man had objected before to his use of nude models. The administrator, no longer on staff, insisted.

"That looks like Jesus," McNally recalled the man telling him. "And he's naked... . That's a terrible sin, painting Jesus naked."

McNally didn't think so. But he concedes that when it comes to nudity, the line between the sacred and profane, the pornographic and the artistic, is not at all obvious.

After passing through corridors packed with student paintings and sculptures, I met McNally in his small office in the Tudor-style building that houses the art department at the university.

He told me people relate to nude figures in paintings because we connect to their humanity. And it takes skill for an artist to learn to paint the whole human body. He likes to start his art students drawing from live nude models right away, leaving the fruits and flowers for later. "It's a way of getting in touch with yourself," he said.

Online attack holds files to ransom

A woman from Greater Manchester has become a victim of an internet scam in which hackers hijack computer files and blackmail owners to get them back.

Helen Barrow, a 40-year-old nurse from Rochdale, is believed to be one of the first victims of the con in the UK.

Criminals encrypt files with complex passwords, leaving a ransom note telling victims not to contact police.

Ms Barrow's note said that she would have to buy drugs from an online pharmacy to find out the password.

The new phenomenon, known as Ransomware, means victims cannot access any of the files stored in their My Documents folder.

Killer Wants State To Pay For Sex Change

A convicted killer serving a life sentence for murdering his wife 16 years ago wants Massachusetts to pay for his sex change operation.

Television station WCVB reported that Robert Kosilek now goes by the name Michelle. He's already been before the state courts and has received favorable rulings.

The court has previously granted the 57-year-old the right to have the state pay for his female hormone treatments and laser hair removal after a judge ruled he is entitled to treatment for a condition called gender identity disorder.

Now, Kosilek wants the commonwealth to pay for a sex change operation to become a woman.

Doctor accused of seeking sex from minor online

A Jackson Memorial Hospital doctor was arrested Tuesday morning after detectives say he set up raunchy webcam sessions and sent explicit photos of himself to what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.

It was actually a detective from Tequesta in Palm Beach County.

Dr. Jose Gustavo Valladares is charged with harmful material to a minor and online solicitation of a minor for sex.

Police say Valladares has been under investigation for about two months.

Lord, She Bought Him A Mercedes-Benz

A New York woman was arrested today for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old boy whose suspicious mother called cops when he showed up one day driving a Mercedes-Benz that he said was a gift from the woman.

According to Nassau County cops, Lisa Frodella, a 39-year-old married mother of two, had "multiple sexual encounters" with the boy, including trysts this year at Long Island hotels.

Frodella, pictured below in a Nassau County Police Department mug shot, has been charged with two counts of rape and two counts of criminal sexual act.

Couple Offered Hit Man $100 To Kill Grandkids

Two grandparents in Lake County, Fla., were arrested for allegedly offering a hit man $100 to kill their three grandchildren, daughter-in-law and the family's pet dog, according to Local 6 News.

Lake County deputies said Robert Jackson, 60, and his wife, Versie, 59, traveled to a Best Western hotel Tuesday to meet a hit man -- who was an undercover law enforcement officer.

"(The couple) met with the so-called hit man, where they paid the hit man $100 in cash as a down payment for the murder of the wife and her three children," Lake County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Christie Mysinger said.

Unknown species found in isolated Israeli caves systems

Eight hitherto unknown species of invertebrate creatures isolated from the outside world for millions of years have been discovered in a unique subterranean ecosystem functioning in a cave in central Israel.

A team of scientists from Hebrew University said yesterday they had discovered the new species of crustaceans and scorpion-like animals in a cave uncovered during rock drilling at a cement quarry near Ramle.

The creatures include an omnivorous blind five-centimetre crustacean which the team have established as the highest in the food chain, capable of devouring other creatures as well as bacteria also found among what the scientists said were "exciting sediments" in the cave.

One of the team, Dr Hanan Dimentman said that the creature had three "relatives" in the Jordan Valley, and in the eastern Mediterranean off the coasts of southern Italy and Libya. But the team said that biomolecular analysis and DNA testing had already established that the crustacean and the other seven species were unique. The species are now being sent to experts in Europe and Israel for naming and classification
