Killer crack head tried to decapitate widow


A widow grieving for her husband had her throat slashed by a friend who then tried to decapitate her, the Old Bailey heard today. Joyce Newing, 66, was attacked from behind by Kevin Harrigan, 27, while she was alone in her flat during the the early hours of the morning. The crack addict, who had known Mrs Newing for over 10 years, cut her throat from behind with a serrated knife and as she lay bleeding to death tried to cut her head from the body in an act of "mutilation.". Mrs Newing had buried her husband only three days before being murdered on July 7 last year. Convicted cocaine smuggler Harrigan then ransacked her home in Mexborough House, Camden, north London, to buy rocks of the deadly addictive drug and alcohol. Harrigan had claimed he suffered amnesia during the attack but pleaded guilty to murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a recommendation that he serve at least 23 years before being considered for parole. Sentencing, Judge Peter Rook QC said: "On July 7 last year Joyce Newing, following the recent death of her husband, was living alone on a second floor one-bedroom flat in Camden.
