Commissioner Winton Charged In Police Beating
After complaints from the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association and black community groups, the State Attorney’s office has charged Commissioner Johnny Winton for an airport incident where he allegedly beat a police officer.
The City of Miami commissioner has been charged with two felony counts of battery on a police officer and disorderly intoxication, a misdemeanor, stemming from a May altercation at Miami International Airport.
Under Florida law, the governor can remove government officials charged with felonies from office pending the outcome of the case. A spokeswoman for Gov. Jeb Bush said Monday his office had not received Winton's charging documents and no decision had been made.
Winton, who police said was intoxicated, allegedly got into a fight with airport police May 15 after his flight was canceled. One officer was kicked in the groin and another suffered a chipped tooth, while Winton was injured himself after banging his head against a wall.
